“If you spilled minestra on the Bahnhofstrasse you could eat it right up without a spoon” – these were James Joyce’s words commenting on Zurich’s cleanliness during his stay in the city.
As part of Liceo Artistico's Project Week 2023 we decided to send our 2nd year students to find out whether the above statement still stands more than a hundred years on. They walked around Zurich retracing the footsteps of the famous Irish author and by visiting places connected to him, they also learned some interesting details about Joyce’s life and works.
Joyce’s favourite place in Zurich, Platzspitz, where the rivers Sihl and Limmat meet turned out to be our students’ favourite destination too. The James Joyce Foundation impressed with its location in a 17th century building in the Old Town, as well as with its collection of Ulysses memorabilia, specifically Leopold Bloom’s moustache cup.
Inspired by the author’s experimental prose, we spent the afternoon with creating blackout poetry using pages taken out of Ulysses.
Funnily enough, we ended the term with a nice meal of minestra, which we decided to eat with spoons, from a bowl.
